In a bid to put a damper on “creepy” content on its video-sharing app, TikTok has introduced several new features that it hopes will help to keep its users safe and prevent inappropriate content from being shared.
This morning, the popular video app TikTok revealed an update in which it has added a bunch of new safety and privacy features for its teen audience. The new features include: Separate profiles for boys and girls prevent inappropriate content from appearing in another teens’ story. Sharing is disabled in profile and story comments, so trolls can’t disrupt teen conversations. Customized notifications for when a teen has posted a new video, so they can choose to receive them when they want. TikTok is the only app that works with popular kids’ devices like Alexa products and Samsung Adaptive TVs.
“TikTok is a video service that allows users to create, share, and view short videos. The app was recently released by YouTube parent company, Google, and its release has caused friction between the company and several governments, including China. The controversy surrounds the app, which has been accused of encouraging dangerous behaviors, including suicide.”
TikTok has added additional safety and privacy features to make the app a more inviting and secure environment for adolescents aged 13 to 17. The new modifications will be pushed out worldwide in the following weeks, according to the platform.
TikTok provides a variety of safety and privacy settings to let users, particularly teenagers, to choose who they share their material with. TikTok has continued to make improvements to promote age-appropriate experiences on the site in order to provide even greater proactive safety for adolescents. The most recent updates include keeping accounts for those under the age of 16 private by default, restricting services like Direct Messaging for those 16 and above, and allowing parents to manage their teen’s TikTok presence via Family Pairing.
When a user aged 16-17 joins TikTok, their Direct Messaging option will now be set to ‘No One’ by default, as part of the new improvements. They will have to actively switch to a different sharing option in order to message others. Existing accounts that have never used DMs will be prompted the next time they use this feature to verify and confirm their privacy settings. These changes add to TikTok’s existing messaging safeguards, which include not allowing pictures or videos in messages and prohibiting messaging for users under the age of 16.
Teens will now be able to select who they want to share their films with on TikTok. TikTok is introducing a pop-up that displays when adolescents under the age of 16 are ready to post their first video, allowing them to select who may view it. This is to assist teens understand the sharing choices accessible to them. They won’t be allowed to share their film until they choose a winner. As time goes on, artists may choose who can view their videos before they publish them. By default, accounts between the ages of 13 and 15 are set to private, and private accounts may opt to share their material with Followers or Friends since the ‘Everyone’ setting is disabled. For accounts under the age of 16, Duet and Stitch are also disabled.
TikTok will provide extra information to assist 16-17-year-olds understand how downloads operate so they may choose the option that is most convenient for them. If users choose to enable the function, a pop-up will appear asking them to confirm their decision before others may download their movies. Downloads on material are permanently banned for accounts under the age of 16.
With tools like Screen Time Management, which may be activated by account holders or parents as part of Family Pairing, TikTok emphasizes and supports the well-being of its community members. TikTok routinely works with top paediatric experts and youth well-being advocates to create content standards, a bullying prevention guide, and other features that promote youth well-being in order to assist younger adolescents build good digital habits early on. TikTok will make adjustments based on this study to limit the amount of time that younger adolescents may get push alerts. Push notifications will be deactivated for accounts aged 13-15 beginning at 9 p.m., and for accounts aged 16-17 starting at 10 p.m.
