The third and final part of filmmaker David Gordon Green’s Halloween sequel trilogy, Halloween Ends, does not see the return of evil, but there is a trick-or-treat twist. Halloween and Halloween Kills (in theaters and streaming on Peacock on October 15) are direct sequels set exactly 40 years after John Carpenter’s 1978 original. They continue the masked Michael Myers’ (James Jude Courtney and Nick Castle) reign of terror on Halloween night 2018. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), who was injured in the fiery confrontation that ended Green’s first Halloween, leads a vigilante mob to put an end to Michael’s killing spree once and for all — or at least until their final confrontation in Halloween Ends, which is set to be released on October 14, 2022.

When Halloween comes to a close next year, it will be with a fresh “twist ending” devised by Green ahead of the commencement of filming on the trilogy’s conclusion, Halloween Ends, in January.

“I believe part of my self-indulgence is that [Halloween Ends] has a completely different tone from Halloween [2018] and Halloween Kills. I often switch genres and use movies to explore various topics and personalities “In a piece published on the night of Halloween Kills, Green told The Hollywood Reporter. “As a result, I’ve made it a point to adopt distinct technical approaches to each of the three films in this trilogy for my personal enjoyment as a fan. So I’m eager to show you what we’ve been working on, but we’re still in the planning stages. I’m certain that will change.”

“”I just came up with a new twist ending on the conclusion from a few weeks ago,” the filmmaker teased, “and that’s something that only I have the piece of paper with those words on it.” So there aren’t any spoilers here.”

Green directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Danny McBride (who previously co-wrote 2018’s Halloween) and Scott Teems, who replaces Jeff Fradley as co-writer. Ends will take place in 2022, after Halloween and Halloween Kills, which picks up where Green’s previous film left off.

Green previously told Uproxx, “It leaps into a current chronology.” “So we move from two episodes airing on the same night in 2018 to two episodes airing on different nights in 2019. We’ll come up to speed with [Ends] after that… It will happen at the time of the film’s release.”

“The world is a different place where we’re leaving these people on Halloween 2018,” Green said of the 40-years-later sequel. “So not only is their immediate environment impacted by the trauma, but they also have time to absorb it — and this is a particular and immediate horrific incident in Haddonfield. But then there was a global epidemic, strange politics, and a million other things that flipped their world upside down.”

Halloween Kills is currently showing in cinemas and will be available for 60 days on Peacock TV. (If you haven’t already signed up for Peacock, you may do so here.) On October 14, 2022, Halloween will come to an end.
