Tom Savini’s early films with Pittsburgh director George A. Romero, including Martin, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Creepshow, and Monkey Shines, are revisited in this video. We also learn more about the makeup and special effects utilized in cult masterpieces such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Friday the 13th (I-IV), Maniac, The Burning, and The Prowler.

Savini has been open about how his Vietnam experiences impacted his makeup effects. When questioned, he responds, “That is a question I am often asked. I saw a lot of first-hand anatomically accurate gore, and I think the most significant aspect of that was realizing that even if we construct a dead corpse or scenario, seeing the actual thing gives you a different sensation. I’m not pleased if I’m producing a gruesome effect and it doesn’t give me the same sensation as seeing the actual thing.” Do you remember the scary mask from The Black Phone? You guessed correctly! Savini!

“How hilarious, I assumed this could be your work the minute I saw the poster online,” one admirer said of his work. Demonstrating that he’s been frightening the living daylights out of us since we were born, “Working on anything with @scottderrickson gives me the greatest goosebumps. You are a real craftsman, Savini. Scott, you are a great director! I’m still disappointed that you didn’t get to work on Dr. Strange 2.” “Looks scary as hell friend, fantastic work as usual, you’re the man,” says another.

For almost two decades, he has directed the Tom Savini Special Makeup Effects Program at the Douglas Education Center. His catchphrase is, “‘What do I need to see in order to trust that what I’m seeing is true?’ Then you present it to a group of people.”
