Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin offered a new Tomlinism on Thursday, stating that his team would win the game even if they had to “go nuts” in order to do so.

During his five-minute news conference on Monday, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin used numerous Tomlinisms. But there was one brand-new term that stuck out above the others.
On one occasion, Tomlin was questioned whether James Pierre, a former undrafted free agent, had shown enough to play right cornerback on passing downs. He said that the competition is still going on, but he did so in a very unusual manner.
Tomlin informed reporters, including Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, that “we’re still squirreling those nuts.” “He’s got another huge game coming up.” This week, he and others will get some practice. He and J. Layne are doing well. We’ll keep an eye on things,” he said, implying that several positions, including cornerback, would not be decided until after Friday night’s preseason game against Carolina (7:30 p.m. ET).
The Steelers’ New Cornerback Strategy
In an ideal scenario, the Steelers would retain fifth-year CB Cam Sutton, 26, at right cornerback full-time, with one of many possibilities coming in to fill Mike Hilton’s slot corner shoes. (Hilton held that position for the previous four seasons until joining the Cincinnati Bengals on a four-year contract in mid-March.)
However, owing to health problems, neither Antoine Brooks Jr. nor Arthur Maulet have been able to gain the position entirely. Brooks has missed the past two preseason games due to injury, while Maulet was out against the Detroit Lions with an ankle ailment. Maulet’s availability for practice and the preseason finale on Friday is still up in the air.
Meanwhile, rookie undrafted free agent Shakur Brown (Michigan State) is still in the mix, but he isn’t expected to play a major role in the solution anytime soon.
This explains why the Steelers seem to be planning to use Sutton both inside and outside the box, with either Pierre or former third-round selection Justin Layne entering the game if Sutton is moved to the slot. Joe Haden, CB1, is expected to play left cornerback at all times.
Sutton, who stands 5’11” and weighs 188 pounds, is well-suited for this back-and-forth position, according to Tomlin.
He stated that it’s “extremely simple for him, but tough for others.” “However, even before the draft, it was one of the things that drew us to him. The night before his Pro Day in Knoxville [at the University of Tennessee] is one of our favorite memories. We were blown away by his football intelligence, and that has continued throughout his time here.”
Tomlin had a ready answer for why the Steelers didn’t deploy Sutton in the slot until the Lions game.
“We haven’t concentrated on that aspect since we are familiar with it. We know Cam can play inside, so we focused on others for a while, but as the preseason progresses, we’ll need to gear him up and make him ready to play in that spot….”

L.J. Fort, a former Steelers linebacker, has been placed on injured reserve.
Inside linebacker L.J. Fort was put on the injured reserve list by Baltimore on Monday. During Baltimore’s 20-3 win against Carolina on Saturday, Fort tore his ACL.
The Ravens released Jordan Richards and Andre Smith, dismissed Michael Dereus, and assigned L.J. Smith to the practice squad. Fort has been placed on injured reserve.
