Governor Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Joe Biden held a rally in Long Beach, California on the eve of a potential recall election.

LONG BEACH, Calif. (CBSLA) — One day before California Governor Gavin Newsom’s recall election, President Joe Biden came to Long Beach to campaign alongside him.

At a rally at Long Beach City College, Newsom and Biden appeared together.
During the roughly 15-minute speech, Biden added, “We need science, we need bravery, we need leadership, and we need Gavin Newsom.”
“A governor who believes in science and has the guts to do the right thing,” Biden added.
Biden attempted to link recall backers to former President Donald Trump.
“You either retain Gavin Newsom as governor or you get Donald Trump,” Biden told the gathering of around 1,100 people, which included Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, who will soon be Biden’s ambassador to India, and Senator Alex Padilla.
“The decision should be crystal clear,” Biden said once again. “Gavin Newsom,” says the narrator. You have a governor who is willing to take charge.”
This was Biden’s first trip to California since becoming the presidency. He landed to Long Beach Airport just after 6 p.m. on Air Force One and left the aircraft with Newsom close behind. As Biden’s vehicle approached the event, hundreds of pro-Trump protestors gathered outside.
Biden slept in Long Beach on Monday night and will fly out of the airport on Tuesday morning.

The event was the last attempt by Newsom’s campaign to thwart the recall attempt. Last Wednesday, Newsom and Vice President Kamala Harris campaigned in Northern California. The deadline for voters throughout the state to cast a ballot or return a vote-by-mail ballot is Tuesday.
“A sitting president has never visited our school before. Long Beach Community College District Interim President Dr. Mike Munoz told CBSLA Monday morning, “We’ve had visits from Sens. Clinton and Sanders in recent years, but this is the first time we’re having a sitting president visit Long Beach City College.”

Larry Elder, the Republican talk show personality who is leading in the polls to succeed Newsom if the recall is successful, downplayed the governor’s high-level backing.
“All you need to know about how clueless and disconnected Gavin Newsom is from a huge majority of Californians is that he believes bringing in Joe Biden and Kamala Harris — not exactly the most admired government figures at the moment — would make him seem better.”
Elder visited two rallies in the Los Angeles region on Monday, with another stop scheduled for Monday afternoon in San Pedro and a volunteer rally planned for Monday night in Costa Mesa.
Elder reiterated many of the recall’s themes during a Monday morning speech in Monterey Park, criticizing Newsom’s handling of problems including homelessness, violence, and the COVID-19 epidemic, blaming him of “ignoring science” in imposing business and school closures.
Only two issues appear on the recall ballot: should Newsom be removed from office, and if so, who should take his place?
If 50% of voters say no to the first question, Newsom will be re-elected, and the results of the second question will be meaningless. If the first question gets more than 50% of the vote, Newsom will be ousted from office and replaced by the candidate who obtains the most votes on the second issue.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Long Beach issued a traffic warning and closed numerous key routes across the city until midday Tuesday. The Long Beach Convention Center was surrounded by roadblocks.
Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia tweeted late Sunday night, “Long Beach lighted up in red, white, and blue the evening before the president’s arrival.”
Biden’s visit to Long Beach is part of a three-state trip that began with a visit to the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, on Monday, followed by a stop in Northern California to assess damage from the devastating Caldor Fire, which has destroyed hundreds of homes and forced thousands of people to flee.
Biden will go to Denver on Tuesday to promote his “Build Back Better” economic recovery plan.
