A 35:1 payout looks great until you remember that only one number can win it. Red pays just 1:1, but you’ve got 18 numbers working for you. That’s the basic deal with roulette: the more numbers a bet covers, the less it pays.
You don’t need much math to make sense of the table. Once you know how many pockets a bet covers and which wheel you’re playing, most of the probabilities are pretty easy to work out.
Start With the Number of Pockets
European roulette has 37 pockets: numbers 1 through 36 and a single 0. American roulette adds 00, bringing the total to 38.
That one-pocket difference affects every standard bet.
Put a chip on 17. The chance of hitting it is 1/37 on a European wheel, or about 2.70%. On an American wheel, it’s 1/38, or roughly 2.63%.
The payout is 35:1 on both.
That’s the first thing worth remembering about roulette payouts: they don’t get better just because another zero has been added to the wheel.
Why a Single Number Pays 35:1
If there were only 36 possible results, a fair payout on one winning number would be 35:1. One outcome wins, and the other 35 lose.
Roulette adds at least one zero without increasing that payout.
So on a European wheel, you’re trying to hit one pocket out of 37 but still getting paid 35:1. American roulette makes the gap larger by adding 00 as a 38th possible result.
That’s where the house edge starts. The casino doesn’t need to take a fee from each winning bet. The zeros do the work.
The Same Pattern Runs Across the Table
Single numbers make the idea easy to see, but the same applies to wider bets.
A split covers two numbers and pays 17:1. A street covers three and pays 11:1. A corner covers four and pays 8:1. Six numbers pay 5:1.

The payouts drop as more numbers are covered. That’s why a $10 bet on red can’t return the same profit as $10 on one number.
Live Roulette Doesn’t Change the Math
A live table can feel very different from a digital roulette game. There’s a dealer spinning a real wheel, a betting countdown, other chips appearing on the layout, and usually a history of recent results sitting somewhere on the screen.
None of that changes the probability.
If a live American wheel has 38 pockets, number 17 still has a 1 in 38 chance of landing. Red still covers 18 of those pockets. A corner still covers four.
Roulette 77 has different tables running at roulette77.us/live-roulette, but the math doesn’t move with the camera or the dealer. On a 38-pocket wheel, 17 is still a 1-in-38 shot.
Red Doesn’t Quite Have a 50% Chance
Red and black are probably the easiest bets to misunderstand.
There are 18 red numbers and 18 black ones. That looks like a perfect 50/50 split until you count the green pockets.
On a European wheel:
18 ÷ 37 = 48.65%
On an American wheel:
18 ÷ 38 = 47.37%
Both versions still pay 1:1.
The same thing happens with odd/even and 1–18/19–36. They’re called even-money bets because of the payout, not because the probability is exactly even.
Probability and Payout Aren’t the Same Thing
This sounds obvious, but roulette makes it easy to mix them up.
A dozen has a 31.58% chance of winning on an American wheel and pays 2:1. A straight-up number has only a 2.63% chance and pays 35:1.
The larger payout isn’t a bonus for taking a brave bet. It’s there because the bet wins much less often.
A quick way to read the table is:
● more numbers covered means more frequent wins;
● fewer numbers covered means larger payouts;
● neither automatically means better odds against the casino.
That last point matters because most standard bets on the same roulette version have exactly the same house edge.
How the House Edge Fits In
Take European roulette. Most bets have a 2.70% house edge.
Now take American roulette. Adding 00 pushes that figure to 5.26% on most bets.
That doesn’t mean the casino takes 5.26% from every American roulette bet. You can put $10 on black and win $10, with nothing deducted from the payout.
The percentage shows up over a huge number of wagers. If $1,000 were wagered repeatedly under the same 5.26% mathematical edge, the theoretical loss works out to $52.60. Real short sessions can finish far above or below that number.
House edge is a long-run average, not a bill handed to you after every spin.
A Winning Bet Can Still Leave the Round Down
This is worth knowing if you like spreading chips around.
Say you put $1 on ten different straight-up numbers. The total bet is $10.
One of your numbers hits. That $1 chip wins at 35:1, giving you $35 in profit plus the original $1 chip back. The other nine $1 bets lose.
So yes, you won a bet – but what matters is the result of the whole round.
The same issue comes up when mixing dozens, corners, and single numbers. Seeing a winning chip light up doesn’t automatically tell you whether the complete set of bets made money.
The Math Is Easier Than the Table Looks
Roulette layouts are busy, especially the first time you see one. The math behind them is much simpler.
Count how many pockets the bet covers. Divide that number by the total pockets on the wheel. Then look at the payout.
That’s enough to understand most of what the table is offering. The rest – chip placement, different bet names, live dealers, and fancy interfaces – doesn’t change those basic numbers.
